International SharePoint Conference – 23rd – 25th April 2012

Ok I may be a bit late with this post but the last couple of weeks have been completely mad, with birthday, swims and customer visits.

I really enjoyed the whole conference, and credit to Steve Smith and the whole Combined Knowledge team. I thought the solution driven sessions worked really well, and all the tracks were excellent. Also thanks to Matthew Hughes I did some live blogging during the conference which gives a great feel for the sort of sessions which were available, and you can catch up on my posts here

My session of Building an InfoPath Order Solution went really well, and many thanks to Richard Foster for speaking with me. If you want to find out a bit more about my session please read my previous post or view my presentation

Thanks to Matt Groves for taking the pictures and kindly letting me use the pictures of me.

Final thought, everyone really needs to go to the SharePoint Evolution Conference in 2013.

April 20
ISC London - CS702 Building an InfoPath Ordering Solution

With only a few days to go I thought I would give everyone a quick overview of my presentation at the International SharePoint Conference (#isclondon).

For my presentation I will be joined by Richard Foster from Thornton and Ross to give you an overview of the InfoPath Order Solution which ISC Software wrote for Thornton and Ross. This solution was based on SharePoint and InfoPath, and includes the following key features

  • Customer History
    • Defaults to Last Ordered Items
    • Current and Historical Stock
    • Appropriate Pricing for Customer
  • Live Stock Enquiry
  • Additional Information
    • Notes for Sales Managers
    • Detailing for where Order can't be taken
  • Customisable Branch Call Questionnaires

This form has been a great success for Thornton and Ross with ROI expected within 2 years, and a great more effective sales force.  I am hoping the presentation will tell you a little bit about the project and the success it has brought. Furthermore I hope to make the following key points

  • How we approached an Online/Offline Form Solution
  • Lessons Learnt for using InfoPath and SharePoint platform
  • The importance of identifying and achieving ROI
  • SharePoint and particularly InfoPath may need to be a strategic investment

Come join us at 11.15 on Monday in the Rutherford Room http://www.internationalsharepointconference.com/Pages/Sessions.aspx#CS702

Sharepoint 2010 Virtualisation

Sharepoint 2010 Virtualisation remains a hot topic and for many firms it is still as yet unexplored territory and the concepts surrounding virtualisation are pushing the knowledge boundaries for Sharepoint Infrastructure Architects, Administrators and Solution Architects into areas they thought they wouldn't need to understand, away from the physical and into the conceptual.

This presentation offers an introductory view of some of the important aspects to consider when thinking about utilizing virtualization in the Sharepoint 2010 world and considers reasons for virtualizing Sharepoint 2010, supported physical and virtual platform architectures, guidelines for choosing which aspects of farm to virtualize, support and the issues it brings, considers layered designs as an easy means of visualising virtual architecture and introduces conceptual Geo-DR.

Blog Finally up and Running, a few Lessons Learnt

Earlier this year I had this great idea. Move my blog and email to Office 365 and for only £4 I would also get my own SharePoint Site. Let's say there a few things which were unexpected

  1. Actually getting my own domain to work with Office 365 – Ok so my domain http://www.baddaz.com is registered with 1&1 and in turns out Microsoft method for linking your domain to Office 365 is not supported by 1&1. By following the steps in the forum post you should be able to get things up and running with 1&1.

  2. Office 365 is not exactly like regular SharePoint – Ok so you public website (On small business version) looks like a left over from Office Live, so how do you create a blog. This one is quite easy actually, just go to http://domain/_layouts/viewlsts.aspx and from there you should be able to create a new Blog site and set anonymous access. The only downside is you have the initial website, but this is a good bio site.

  3. Anonymous access does not work – So off I went happily blogging, until @mattmoo2 told me he could access my posts. It turns out that a blog in Office 365 is not anonymous for accessing blog articles, but fortunately @martinhatch has a great solution to solve this problem.

  4. Don't delete your first account – Ok so I thought my problems were solved, but to Activate Martin's solution I need to be a Site Collection Administrator. When I first registered Office 365 I did not use my own domain, and when I switched over I deleted the original account. I turns out that this original account had certain permissions, which my new account did not, and I could not activate the solution. After about a week Microsoft support was able to solve the problem.

So here I am, a little bit bruised from the experience but still think Office 365 is a nice solution, just wish I could use Live Writer.

Baddaz is back

I have been offline, so this is my first posting in my blog for several months, and a lot has happened it that time which explains my lack of activity.

  • I have finally moved house into a two bedroom house in Huntingdon, which took quite a bit longer to decorate than I imagined.
  • I have adopted a cat from Neighbour of my sister
  • I have been very busy at work, including spending three weeks out in Ireland

With all these things happening I also decided to move the home of my blog again, to what is a permanent home. I have setup a £4 a month Office 365 account which gives me Exchange, Lync and a SharePoint Foundation site (The new home of my blog).

As a result of these changes I have got to make a few updates to my blog and also note it has a new location in my site structure. I hope to be a bit more active on my blog and especially will try to talk about my experiences of using Office 365.
